The artsy ceramics town of Arita, Japan is an underrated travel gem

A lot of people visiting Japan, especially for the first time, tend to stick to the bigger cities - Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and maybe a little bit of Hiroshima and Fukuoka. Understandable, because it's tricky to know how travel will be when you start to venture off, and whether language will become a barrier to enjoyment. However, there is a wealth of experiences and destinations in Japan that are worth exploring, and if you really want to visit somewhere with plenty to do and not crowded with tourists while still having plenty of resources to get around easily, then Arita is our recommendation.
This idyllic little town is home to a dwindling population of fewer than 20,000, and is built on the ceramics and porcelain industry. You'll find it embedded in every facet of the town, from the souvenirs in the retail stores and the plates upon which food is served to the museums and activities available. Make sure to check out our previous reels on the ceramics treasure hunt, what we did, and where we stayed in Arita!
