Adoor Gopalakrishnan is one of the most distinguished filmmakers ever produced by India. Hailing from a village in the southern state of Kerala, he made a name of his own in world cinema with his oeuvre of extraordinary films and brilliant documentaries. This is the first part of a three-part conversation with Adoor Gopalakrishan conducted by C.S. Venkiteswaran in March 2020. Here Adoor Gopalakrishnan travels down the memory lane and brings alive his childhood in a family known for their love for arts and books. Adoor speaks about how Gandhi took his fancy as a child and the way he cried non-stop upon hearing the news of Gandhi’s assassination. The conversation covers the feudal system and matrilineal traditions that prevailed in Kerala when Adoor grew up, and on which many of his films are based. Adoor speaks of the two great influences in his life—his mother and Gandhi, and recalls his years at the Film and Television Institute of India. Pune.
